Police arrested 14 protestors at 19th St. and Stout St. at an immigration march on Tuesday when they blocked the road in an act of civil disobedience.
Over 100 people of all ages, including faith leaders, veterans, immigrants, labor organizers and business owners, marched from the Capitol on Colfax Ave. and Lincoln St. to the Federal Building downtown to call for changes to the country's immigration laws.
Police say the 14 marchers were arrested after kneeling down and refusing to get out of the road in front of the courthouse. Officers put blue plastic handcuffs on them, ticketed them for the misdemeanor charge of blocking a roadway and took them to jail.
The Service Employees International Union is leading several similar efforts across the country in an effort to demand that President Obama "understand that immigrants make countless contributions to the economy and will be able to give even more if given legal status."
Advocates have become more vocal after Arizona passed a law requiring officers to question people about their immigration status during traffic stops or other encounters if there's reason to suspect someone is in the country illegally.
