By Padres & Jovenes UnidosBoletin Update: Volume 5, Issue 1January 13, 2010On Friday, January 8, 2010 at North High School, Jóvenes Unidos held its first Know Your Rights presentation on the new Denver Public Schools (DPS) discipline policies. This event kicked-off the Jóvenes Unidos campaign to hold the District accountable for educating students on the new discipline policies and the Restorative Justice program, fully implementing the new policies and ending the school-to-jail track.
The presentation included a performance by North High School's Drum Line, a skit that demonstrated to students how the Restorative Justice program works, student speeches about the importance of youth organizing and an overview of students' rights under the new policies.
Over 900 North High School students attended the Jóvenes Unidos presentation to learn about the new discipline policies and their rights.
If fully implemented, the new discipline policies:
End the school-to-jail track by addressing the racial disparities in discipline
Keep students in school and learning
Treat all students and parents with dignity and respect
Increase attendance, graduation and college enrollment
